Many people believe that writing content for SEO purposes and writing to attract and entertain an audience are two completely different things, but that doesn’t have to be the case. if you are trying to create an interesting and well optimized blog post, your keywords should be in a very prominent place. But, over-optimizing your post with keywords can be detrimental to the post’s readability, so that is a practice that should be avoided.

Below are a few tips that will hopefully help you to write posts that are both interesting and well optimized.

Tips for good blog posts

First of all, it is important to make sure that your blog post is actually a good piece of writing. Some people when writing a blog post, will just start writing without taking any time to think about what they are going to write or the structure of their writing. This works for some people, but most people would really benefit from taking some time to plan out their content before jumping straight in.

Planning and Structure

Decide what you want the message of your text to be. What do you want to tell your readers or which central question do you want to ask? What is the intended purpose of the post? And what are you hoping the readers will do after reading it? Think about the answers to these questions before you start writing, this will help you to plan out your post.

Your blog post should have a beginning, middle and end or an introduction, the main body of the text and then a conclusion. It is always good to plan out what you want to say in these three sections before you start and then you can properly flesh it out afterwards.

Formatting Your Text

All text uses paragraphs, but make sure that you are using them correctly. You should have a new paragraph new idea or subject you introduce into your post, no more and no less. Think about what the main idea or subject of each paragraph is and try to summarise it into one sentence. If it takes more than one sentence then to explain the idea then you need more than one paragraph.

Headings are a great way to organize the information in your blog post, as well as being important for SEO. Clear headings help Google to correctly index your page more quickly and help with your rankings. Make sure your keywords appear in some of your headings and subheadings. Not in all of them though as that will affect readability.

Good SEO Practices

Your articles should contain no less than 300 words. Google prefers long articles, but if the article is too long you run the risk of turning away potential readers. So try to keep it under 700 words. Your keywords should appear in about 1 to 2 percent of your text. So in a 500 word article your keywords should appear 5 to 10 times throughout the article.

If you have previous posts in your blog that are about the same topic you are writing about, it’s good practice to link out to those posts. It will help your Google rankings by showing some authority on the subject. And of course, your reader might be interested in these related posts as well.

Making regular updates to your blog with quality content will give Google more reason to keep updating it’s rankings. Google crawls inactive websites less often, which would have a detrimental effect on your rankings.

Quality content leads to more likes on Facebook, shares, tweets and return visitors to your website. There are more things you can do to to improve the SEO optimization of your blog posts, but the most important thing you can do is to write high quality content!
